Microsoft promotes Steven Sinofsky to President, Windows division

Microsoft issued a press release today stating that Steven Sinofskyhas been named President of the Windows division. He is now responsible for the Windows business including both the engineering and marketing functions for Windows, Windows Live and Internet Explorer. Sinofsky was previously the senior vice president for the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group and was known for leading the team that will be bringing us Windows 7. He was also known for replying to email’s from concerned fans regarding blu-ray support and visual changes in the later builds of Windows 7.

“Steven Sinofsky has demonstrated the ability to lead large teams that deliver great products. The work he and the team have done in getting ready to ship Windows 7 really defines how to develop and ship world-class software,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “He is a perfect fit to lead the Windows group.”

“Windows 7 is receiving terrific feedback from customers, partners, analysts alike, and the entire Windows team has done a great job.” wrote Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in an internal email to employees announcing Sinofsky’s promotion.

Bill Veghte, another name we have heard many times in Windows 7 newsbits, will also be moving to a new leadership role in the company to be announced later this year.

Windows 7 is currently scheduled to RTM sometime in July, with rumors claiming a July 13 announcement of the final build. The official release date for Windows 7 is October 22.
